Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary

We restored this well-respected organization’s largest and oldest structure at 7th Street and 13th Avenue NE, transforming it into the Renfrew Hub, a bustling, inclusive centre with remarkable programs and services for children ranging from preschool age to adulthood. In consultation with the Indigenous Elders’ council and members of the LGBTQ2S+ community, flexible and thoughtful spaces were created where every young person can feel safe and respected.

The renovation was completed in three phases: in the first phase, we demolished half of the main floor office space and built a preschool, daycare, some offices, storage and washrooms. For this space to be accessible during the second phase of renovation, we built a tunnel so parents and children could tour the new classrooms and workers could safely access the finished space.

During phase two, we created one of the most unique features, a circular space called Pookasks Awa Mii Piyoo Tsii Tsaa, meaning “Children Coming Together,” which draws on Indigenous teachings and traditions. The basement was designed to provide significantly more usable space, and the stairwells were freshened up with unique paintings completed by local community artists that demonstrate the organization’s commitment to inclusivity.

Finally, for phase three, we spruced up the teen centre on the second floor of the historical Rutledge Hangar.
