The 22,000-square-foot space on 1st Street and 11th Avenue SE in Calgary, formerly home to the Cantos Music Foundation, required remediation without disturbing the upstairs tenant. We rebuilt this vacant, demolished two-level interior space into a beautiful, exciting office space.
A mixture of new and old complement each other within this building. The exterior is the original Alberta red brick and sandstone, with symmetrical fenestration of rectangular and arched openings, numerous columns, block-modillion sheet-metal cornice and its original large windows. The architect designed an impressive front door entrance by dropping part of the second-floor slab, then created a remarkable stairwell opening that leads to the offices upstairs. They added green walls designed to look like City of Calgary maps and named the boardrooms after city communities. The HVAC was redesigned to tie in the original system; electrical was replaced; and new bathrooms were installed on the second floor to accommodate 122 employees. One of the more challenging aspects of the project was building a locker room equipped with bike racks, showers and lockers.
The client was impressed with the Ryan Murphy Construction team and our responsiveness and open communication, which is the relationship-driven approach we are all about. We pride ourselves on being “small enough to listen, big enough to deliver,” with a focus on building strong relationships with clients, industry and trade partners. The challenge of working on a heritage building with existing tenants was a great experience that created a lasting relationship with the client.

“Where many contractors may become less visible and willing to close out any outstanding issues or deficiencies, Ryan Murphy has been responsive and attentive to finishing the project and ensuring we are happy with the result.”
